Lionel Pennsylvania Railroad Russian Decapod #1147

Overview

Originally built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Russian State Railway, the Russian Decapods became one of the most unique chapters in American railroad history. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, approximately 200 completed locomotives remained in the United States and were converted to standard American gauge for domestic service.

One of these locomotives, originally numbered 1630, was leased by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1919 and renumbered No. 1147 for evaluation. Although it performed well on lighter branch lines, the Pennsylvania ultimately chose not to purchase the locomotive, and it was later sold to the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway.
